Introduction. The farther away you are from the truth, the more the hateful and pleasurable states will arise. There is also self-deception. - Bodhidharma, as quoted in The Bodhisattva Warriors. Tae Kwon Do leads to enlightenment along one of five paths, some people believe, but I have my doubts. I am stuck on the path of Courtesy, which instructors in small gyms around the world know well but which is largely ignored by Tae Kwon Do's leaders. This book is about Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit - the tenets of Tae Kwon Do - a true story about a martial art that I love in spite of its bizarre and wondrous history. Most of us have heard about Tae Kwon Do through children, whose laughter dominates evening and weekend classes in North America, but the art hides a history of secret-service agents, gangsterism, and “fearsome weaponry,” as one of its founders, Choi Hong-Hi, once described it. He wrote that Tae Kwon Do is “able to take lives easily, when needed, by defending and attacking 72 vital spots using 16 well-trained parts of the body.” Choi had a fondness for numbers. He liked their devastating precision. Few young people in Olympic Tae Kwon Do know about Choi, who more than anyone deserves the label “founder” in this martial art. Other “founders” - and there are many - erased him from the popular record long ago. A Killing Art restores him and his pioneers to their place in Tae Kwon Do history. This book is based on Choi's memoirs, the memoirs of Kim Un-yong (a founder of Olympic Tae Kwon Do), and on the hundreds of interviews and documents that I list in the footnotes and bibliography. ...
Kil Yong Sup - Competitive Taekwondourn:md5:3a452c3bdf692ea388bcf5417cb312d82018-04-28T19:12:00+01:002018-04-28T18:14:04+01:00balderKil Yong SupArts MartiauxTaekwondo

Foreword. Taekwondo is a growing martial art all over the world. Its increasing popularity is evidenced by the 60 million students of this martial art in 179 countries. International competition continues to advance through events such as the World Championships and the Olympic Games. Competitive Taekwondo, written by Master Yong Sup Kil and endorsed by the World Taekwondo Federation, contains the insight of a veteran athlete and coach. The book covers the theoretical background of the match, training methods for athletes, kicks, steps, tactics, and sparring strategies. The variety of training covered in the book will expedite a better understanding of taekwondo and give readers a competitive edge. This is a good guidebook for trainees, athletes, and coaches who have a keen desire to understand taekwondo. It is my sincere wish this wonderful martial art continues to inspire all those who seek knowledge of the sport. Preface. Commemorating the publication of Taekwondo Terminology... March 1, 2012. Dear Members of the Taekwondo Family. Since the Kukkiwon was founded in 1973, the Taekwondo Textbook has been published and revised in 1987 and 2005 respectively. However, there is still some difficulty in communication within the taekwondo community where technical terminology is frequently used. Due to the lack of coherence and uniformity in the technical terminology, formulating the names of new techniques has not been easy and different people have used different names for the same techniques. In addition, some technical terms are too long to learn and non‐Koreans have difficulty pronouncing them in Korean. On the other hand, the terms for sparring and demonstration have not been regulated, creating confusion among the players and participants. Thus, there has been an urgent need for the standardization of the technical terminology of taekwondo. In order to respond to the demand, the Kukkiwon started to collect and review the technical terms used in dojang (martial art studios) and competition arenas over the past two years and finally selected 138 terms. The outcome of the efforts is now compiled in the present book with the explanation of each technique. ...
Kim Sang H. - Complete kickingurn:md5:afb70fbd5be007dafe78ab082e0cdbf02016-12-27T12:46:00+00:002016-12-27T13:08:43+00:00balderKim Sang H.Arts MartiauxTaekwondo

Introduction. Kicking is for every fighter. It’s powerful, fast, and deadly. Regardless of martial art style, the fundamentals are much the same: kick fast, kick hard, kick precisely. To meet these goals, you need to train your body, strengthen your muscles, and condition your mind. You’ll be surprised to find initially how natural kicking is, just like walking and running. However, to excel at kicking, you have to go beyond what is natural. You must learn to control your body at all times in order to acquire precision, speed and power. Then your body will become a deadly weapon for self-protection and an invincible tool for sport competition. After you perfect the basic skills, you are only a few steps away from mastering challenging advanced kicks. As you progress and learn increasingly difficult kicks, you will find that practicing kicking enhances your mental clarity and concentration, as well as your physical fitness. ...
Choi Hong Hi - Tae Kwon Do teaching manualurn:md5:58ee97efee9207c0fac275b4c5ee7b4c2015-07-11T00:05:00+01:002015-07-11T00:23:48+01:00balderChoi Hong HiArts MartiauxTaekwondo

This book was preserved through the graciousness of WTF Master Nathan Doggett, a Kukki Taekwondo black belt instructor from Michigan, USA. Master Doggett saw fit to make an agreement to transfer the original book to Grandmaster Jung Woo Jin of Taekwondo Times, a long time special assistant to the ITF president. This will help to insure the safekeeping so that future generations of Taekwon-Do students can forever appreciate this work. Some of the credit for the culmination of the historic presentation goes to the late Grandmaster Al Cole who served as an esteemed member of the Kukkiwon International Advisory Committee. It was Master Al Cole who introduced Master Nathan Doggett before his untimely passing to Master George Vitale, Ph.D as they both served as Senior Technical Advisors to the official Tae Kwon Do Hall of Fame®. Dr. Vitale was honored to have written an obituary for his fellow TKD Brother. Digital access to this piece of Taekwon-Do history is thanks to a number of individuals including WTF Grandmaster Al Cole and Master Nathan Doggett. The preservation of this extremely rare and historically valuable archival asset was made possible when an elderly Korean gentleman saw fit to present it as a gift to an American student and instructor of Korean Taekwondo, Master Nathan Doggett. It is worth noting that authorities in the military dictatorship back at the time General Choi Hong-Hi was forced to flee Korea for his safety, actually ordered the books he wrote to be destroyed. Hence there are only a few known copies still in existence today. Former Lt. Col. Kim Soo-Ryun donated his copy to the museum section at the new Taekwondowon in Muju Korea where it is presently on display. So please feel free to appropriately share this gem as you see fit. But please be honorable in crediting Master Doggett, for without him you may have never had the opportunity to even see it, never mind have a copy of it. Special thanks to Mr. Minh T. Luong of the Original Taekwon-Do Club in Brooklyn New York for the digitally enhanced restorations he graciously provided. I would also be remiss if I failed to mention the invaluable contribution of the technical computer expertise of Mr. Nick Campbell, a fellow American living in Australia. I am thankful for his generous assistance while we toured south Korea on a Taekwon-Do Tul Tour in March of 2015. The time he gave me overcame several years of my frustration in trying to make this archival publication available for free to the general public. Please feel free to utilize and share this historical gem. However please be honorable in crediting Master Doggett, the Chang Hon Foundation and others as appropriate. What is Step Sparring ? Step sparring is a form of drill training used by Taekwondo students to practice and perfect basic stances, blocks, strikes and kicks with a partner. It includes one-step, two-step and three-step sparring, which are characterized by the number of steps forward that the attacker takes at the beginning of the technique. Because step sparring is a series of arranged movements, it is a good way to perfect your technical execution of basic movements through repetitious practice with a partner. It helps you develop distance control, timing, accuracy, self-control, respect toward your partner and teamwork. At the advanced level, step sparring sets become longer and more complex, helping you develop coordination, speed and fluidity. You can use sparring or self-defense skills or a mix of both in step sparring. Depending on the type of skills you are practicing, you may begin from ready stance or fighting stance. However, step sparring techniques should not be confused with sparring or self-defense techniques. ...
