This volume represents a continuing effort to caver comprehensively the unclassified information on explosi1(es à nd related subjects in the Sarrte mann er and format as in previous volumes. The reder is urged to obtain the previous volumes and to read bath the PREFACE and INTRODUCTION iri Volume 1 in arder to undCrstand the au thors' way ofpresenting the subject matter ' In preparation for and during the writing of this Encyclopedia, the au thors have Consulted freely with ahd hllve had the cooperation Or many individuals who contributed their expert knowledge and advice. This fact is acknowledged throughout the text at the end of the subject Herri. A listing of many others who have helped in various ways would be impractical DrsJ. Roth, J. Brown, A.P. Hardt and Mr T.Q. Ciccone of the priva te sec tor, br C.H. McDonnell of the Naval Ordnance Station, Indian Head, Md, as weil as Dr S. Bulusu and Messrs S. Helf, H.L. Herman, J. Hen4rickson and D.J. Veal of the Energetics Materials Divisiofi, LCWSL, ARRADCO indicated at, the end of the articles Dr Ràyrnond F. Walker, Energetics Materials Division Chief, Provided fmancial support and encourage· ment to continue this work, as did Mr Edward J. Kolb ofHeadquarters, US Army Materiel Development and Readiness Command {DARCOM). Further fmancial support was received from the sale of copies to non-government agencies and individuals by the National Technical Information Service, US Department of Commerce, Springfield, Va 22161 Although considerable effort has been made to present this inforrnatiofi as accurately as possible, rnistakes and errors in transcription and translation do occur. Therefore, the au thors encourage the readers to consult original sources, when possible, and to feel free to point out err ors and omissions of important works so that corrections and additions can be listed in the next volume. The interpretations of data and opinions expresRADCOM nor the Depart· ment of the Army shall be responsîble for any events or decisions arising from the use of any information contained hèrein It will be noted that a change in editors has taken place since the publication of Volume 7 in 1975, this change being thè first since the inception of the Encyclopedia program ip 1958. lt was nccessitated by the dea th of Dr Basil T .. Fedoroffin December 1976 (see obituary which follows), and the retirement of MrOiiver E. Sheffield in October 1975 after sorne 34 years of Federal service, withincumbency atPicatinny Arsenal since January 1943. He authored or co-authored over 40 Picatinny Arsenal Technical Reports and AMC ManU.als on explosives, pyrotechnies and propellants. Sheffield is best known as co-editor of this Encyclopedia, with whîch he was associated since 1958 This change in editorial leadership has resulted, perhaps inevitably, if~:.a change in editorial policy which is reflected in the contents ofVohime 8. There has been a marked de-emphasis on the inclusion of organic Hparent compounds" followed by an exhaustive and volumirious cataloging of azide, azido, azo, diazido, diazonium, diazo, nitro, dinitro, polynitro, ilitramine, nitrate (esters and salts), dinitrate, polynitrate, nitroso, polynitroso, cWorate, perchlorate, peroxide, picrate, etc, derivatives- fegardless ofwhether any of these derivatives exhibit documented explosive or energetic properties. Only those rnaterials having such properties have been included in this volume The re has also been a distinct effort made not to· include subject are as which. are not specifically pertinent to the subject of energetic materials In conclusion, I wisl:Î. to acknowledge with gratitude the continuai support and encouragement of Samuel Helf, without whose efforts in behalf of the EncycloPedia of Explosives program, the publication of this volume would not have been possible Seymour M.
